Map of Cuban Missile Range
This map illustrates the ranges of Soviet missiles at the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis. The first ring represents short-range missiles, the second represents intermediate range missiles, and the third ring represents intercontinental ballistic missiles.
At the time of the crisis the US believed the Soviets had only placed short range and intermediate range missiles. Still, the intermediate range missiles could reach Washington, DC and short range weapons could target Cuban exiles in Miami. Maps similar to this were printed in American newspapers, fanning the fears of the general public. The Soviet justification for placing missiles in Cuba was that the US had placed missiles in Turkey capable of reaching Moscow & Leningrad. |
